I believe you have a great point - as long as you get your projects done on time, within budget, and all your customers are happy, and you are available during business hours - then it definitely does not matter where you are in the world getting the work done. Unfortunately, pettiness and jealousy - as well as a micromanaging boss - can get in the way of telecommuting options. This, I do believe, is on the decline, as our governments ask companies to implement telecommuting schedules. Eventually I do believe that telecommuting will become a commonplace, but with some companies, I believe it will need to be forced.

I hope so. I think the three drivers will be: 1) Gen Xers and Millenials taking firm-wide leadership roles, 2) improvements in technology 3) the continual transition from a manufacturing based to a service based economy.

Thanks for the comment Kerry. You might be right. I think GenX and Millennial managers will be more comfortable with a truly mobile, virtual workforce.

Very well put! As you pointed out, the change needs to happen at the company level- not the manager level- for it to be culturally accepted. I have to wonder if this will become more prevalent as the Boomers age out of the workforce.
